Chapter Eighteen

“Is he okay?” Caden clearly wanted to check the door, but he didn’t want to endanger Mathlin.

“Yes, I’ve closed him up and he should recover. Go and see what that is, but since it’s possibly one of the seaweed creatures, or a merperson, do not let whatever is out there touch you.” Lisselle peeled off her gloves and smock.

“Take torches, not the electrical kind,” Nettie said as they ran for the front. “They hate fire.” She really had no idea where that thought came from, but even as she yelled for them to get fire a coldness settled in her gut.

Caden nodded and he, Homer, and Reaves ran toward the front of the house.

The back door crashed again. Rebecca calmly held up her gear gun and Lisselle held one up as well. If the things outside got in, they’d not take them easily.

“Is there one more? I might be stuck in water, but I’m not useless.” Nettie wasn’t sure how effective even a gear gun would be on a pile of mobile and possibly sentient seaweed, but it was better than nothing. Unless it broke in and decided to join her in the tank, she couldn’t really do anything else.

Rebecca was closer to the tank, so she handed Nettie her gun then ran and got another from the box.

The door shook again. This time it sounded like it was going to be rattled off its hinges.

A reflection of flames bounced across the glass in the high windows as the others got to the backyard; the pounding on the doors stopped, and a high-pitched keening sound was heard.

“Don’t lower your weapons, there could be more than one creature out there.” Lisselle was stationed nearest the door, the first line of defense between it and her patient.

Nettie wasn’t sure if whatever was out there was after her, Mathlin, or something else entirely. They’d already drawn unhealthy interest from the sea creatures before she changed and they’d found Mathlin.

The reflection of flames burst up higher and the keening got louder. A charge from at least one gear gun went off, a stun setting by the crackling sound it emitted, and then there was silence. Even when fighting for their lives, SEU agents would try and keep the general populace from knowing what went on around them. The flames died, then more silence and darkness.

“I’m going to go check,” Lisselle said and headed for the doorway into the rest of the house.

“I should go, if they didn’t stop it and are injured, you need to be here to save them,” Rebecca was asking permission, but it didn’t look like she was going to listen if the answer wasn’t what she wanted.

Lisselle looked from Mathlin to Nettie to the door, then finally nodded. “But you only go to the edge of the backyard. If you don’t see them, you come back immediately, do you hear?”

Rebecca nodded and flashed a smile to Nettie, disturbingly coquettish in her men’s clothing. “I’ve come a ways, eh?” With that, she ran through the house.
